Jamestown Island was the site of the site of the first permanent English settlement in Virginia. However, only 1200 out of the 8,500 who arrived between 1607 and 1625, survived. The colony’s capital moved to Williamsburg in 1699 where public buildings echoed the English architecture. Almost every place of Virginia talks of its rich past. From America’s first permanent British settlement to Patrick Henry’s ‘Give me liberty or give me death!’ to the place where a Civil War torn land eventually decided to give United States an honest try, Virginia has witnessed it all.
